Cool Grammar Sites

This week we tested out some of the grammar sites listed in the
Grammar Rules PowerPoint file - found on the school portal community called Secondary One Enriched English.

The best one so far is BBC Skillswise.  Check it out!!!  We tried the adjective game (there is also a fact sheet, a worksheet and a quiz).

It is SICK (no not sick cough cough but SICK meaning cool...good thing I have nieces and nephews who teach me teenspeak on holidays!)

The Baroque Marble by E. A. Proulx

This week we are reading The Baroque Marble and learning how to take notes, ask probing questions, summarize and analyse.  The students are excellent dramatic readers often adding their own personal flair with accents and gestures.  We are having fun!!!

104 Class Discussion on Sports

Sportsmanship
Petru believes that participating in a martial arts class teaches discipline and self respect.  He thinks that by learning Karate for example, one can overcome violence.

Violence in Sports
Simon pointed out that hockey is very violent - even the fans and parents sometimes.
Breanna told us of a soccer game when she was only 10 years old that ended badly.  Police were called in when adults started fighting.  At the end of the game the other team were poor losers and spit into their hands before the traditional handshake.  I find this whole story revolting and shocking.  Isn't it up to the adults to set an example?

Group 103 Class Discussion on Sports

Sportsmanship
Malcolm says that during swimming competitions we all encourage one another to go on.
Nicolas said that this guy was injured on the soccer field and someone from the other team helped him.
Léanne said that during a horse back riding competition her team encouraged one of the riders.

Violence in Sports
Alec says that once there was this soccer game and it turned out badly because there was this guy that did something he wasn’t supposed to do on the field. Then the other team’s fans started fighting with the home team fans and it turned into a big fist fight.
Nicolas says that in baseball somebody hit the ball and the ball was going at around 105 mph and the ball hit the batter in the face. The batter died on the field.
Alec said that last year his soccer team lost a game against Greenfield Park. They always have a bad team and a good team. The referee wasn’t fair so our coach’s wife was screaming at the ref and then there was this person in the stands and he started swearing at her telling her to shut up. At the end the other coach called them losers.
Andréanne said that her friend was playing soccer and then there was a girl who hit her ankle which broke! OMG!!
Morgan’s brother was playing basketball against another team and won 100 to 2. The other team came into his brother’s locker room to start a fight.

Oh dear, another blog. Not sure what I am doing but I am doing something significant I am sure. I just started a forum on google moderator to discuss the future of social networking, online collaboration, discussion forums and blogs in the classroom. We'll see if we get any bites on that one. I am ever hopeful. I asked a question on there which bears repeating here:
"How do we ensure the safety of students using social networking and collaboration software?"
Send me your thoughts.
